Vietnam is suffering from severe drought, and Vietnamese coffee may further reduce production.

Recently, the World Meteorological Organization warned that extreme weather occurs frequently, and climate change is having a heavy impact on Asia.

At present, in some Asian countries such as China and Dubai and other cities, extreme weather such as heavy rain, strong winds, and floods have occurred, and the disaster is severe. In South Asia, such as Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and other countries, there is high-temperature weather, and the highest temperature in many areas exceeds 45 ℃.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, Asia is the most severely affected area in the world, with the highest number of casualties and economic losses caused by floods and storms, and the impact of high-temperature weather is more serious, especially on agricultural crops such as coffee. In the Robusta coffee producing area in Vietnam, it has been in a high-temperature state in recent times, and high temperatures have also led to drought in the region.

Therefore, coffee trees that are in the fruit-setting period need to significantly increase the use of irrigated water, but the current water resources are insufficient.

Due to drought and the soaring temperature, the river beds of many reservoirs are obviously dried up and cracked, and there are reservoirs where hundreds of thousands of fish have died in the reservoir. In five provinces such as Quang Tri Province, Quang Ngai Province, Binh Thuan Province, Phu Yen Province, and Gia Lai Province in Vietnam, a level-two drought warning has been issued.

According to local coffee farmers, in normal seasons, coffee trees are usually irrigated five times, but in the current quarter, many coffee farmers have irrigated coffee trees seven times and think that the eighth irrigation is needed, but there is insufficient water resources to proceed. Wells and underground water used for irrigation are drying up, and in severe water shortage and extreme high temperatures, it will lead to an imbalance in the nutrition of trees. In addition, the hot and dry environment will be conducive to the growth and spread of some pests, which are mainly cotton bollworms and will damage the flowers and fruits on the plant trees, resulting in a final decrease in yield. Recently, some local coffee tree plants in Vietnam have withered and the leaves have turned yellow and fallen.

Apart from being caused by excessive drought, some of them are also affected by pest infestation. It is reported that in the main coffee-producing area in central Vietnam, the province of Gia Lai, which is affected by the cotton bollworm, the situation has not been controlled, and the speed of pest spread is relatively fast, so the current situation is very serious. But in May, the weather has improved slightly, and it will rain locally in Vietnam.

The local meteorological department in Vietnam said that the rainfall in May may be about 2.27 millimeters, which will be able to alleviate the current drought. Recently, the International Coffee Organization published statistical data in recent months. In March 2024, global coffee exports increased by 8.1%, reaching 12.99 million bags. Therefore, even if the future output of many producing countries is not optimistic, the coffee futures price has been falling in recent days.
